Nestled in Sagara Village, within the Bensa district of Ethiopia’s Sidama region, Bekele Belachew and his family cultivate coffee on their six-hectare farm, surrounded by native forest.
Together with his wife and six children, Bekele manages every stage of production, from nurturing the coffee trees with natural compost and manure to carefully handpicking ripe cherries and processing them at their family home.
The farm grows two varieties, 74158 and 74160, originally selected from wild coffee plants in Ethiopia’s Metu-Bishari forest by the Jimma Agricultural Research Centre. Known for their disease resistance and productivity, these varieties are especially prized for their vibrant citrus and delicate floral characteristics.
Following generations of Ethiopian coffee-growing tradition, Bekele produces naturally processed coffee, carefully drying the whole cherries to develop their sweetness, complexity, and distinctive fruit-forward character.
As part of a small group of independent Sidama farmers, Bekele benefits from a collaborative export initiative supported by Falcon Coffees. Through prefinancing, technical guidance, and improved access to international markets, this partnership helps small producers receive greater recognition for their exceptional coffees.
